Cairns is the only place on earth where two World Heritage areas sit side by side: the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforest. That’s a lot of choice for a short trip.
The most common question we get at reception is “which tour should we do?” Here’s our honest answer.
The quick version: Reef trips leave the Reef Fleet Terminal (1 Spence St) between 8am and 10:30am and get back around 5pm. The outer reef is about 90 minutes out and has the clearest water. For rainforest, do Kuranda by train, or Mossman Gorge and the Daintree by car.
Day trips at a glance
| Trip | How far | Best for | Book ahead? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outer reef | ~90 min by boat | Snorkelling, diving | Yes, 2–3 days in peak season |
| Green or Fitzroy Island | 45–60 min by ferry | Little kids, half days | Recommended |
| Kuranda train + Skyrail | ~2 hr by train | Views, markets, wildlife | Yes |
| Mossman Gorge | ~75 min drive | Rainforest swims | No |
| Daintree + Cape Tribulation | ~2.5 hr drive | Croc spotting, rainforest meets reef | A tour is easiest |
| Babinda + Josephine Falls | ~1 hr drive south | Swimming holes, a quieter day | No |
| Atherton Tablelands | ~1.5 hr drive | Waterfalls, crater lakes, cooler air | No |
The reef: how to pick a tour
There are dozens of reef boats, and they’re not all the same. Two questions sort it out.
Outer reef or island?
The outer reef is further out but the water’s clearer and the coral’s better. Islands like Green and Fitzroy are closer and calmer, which is great if you’ve got young kids or a nervous swimmer.

Pontoon or smaller boat?
Pontoons are big floating platforms with underwater viewing areas, semi-subs and loads of space. Perfect for families and non-swimmers. Smaller snorkel and dive boats visit two or three sites, which keen snorkellers love.

Our reef-day tips
- Check in 30–60 minutes early. Boats leave on time.
- Get seasick? Take a tablet before you board and sit low, near the back.
- Wear the stinger suit, especially November to May. They’re not a fashion statement, but they work.
- Pack reef-safe sunscreen and a hat. There’s not much shade out there.
Kuranda: train up, cable car down
The Kuranda Scenic Railway has been climbing the range since 1891. Trains leave Cairns station at 8:30am and 9:30am (or Freshwater 25 minutes later) and take about two hours. Give yourself 2–3 hours in the village for the markets, butterflies and koalas.

Heads up: Skyrail is getting upgraded through 2026–27, so return times can change. Check Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail before you book.
The Daintree: Mossman Gorge to Cape Trib
Head north on the Captain Cook Highway. It’s one of the best coastal drives in Australia, so stop at the Rex Lookout. Past Port Douglas you’ll reach Mossman Gorge, where a shuttle takes you down to the river. Keep going to the Daintree River ferry and on to Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest runs straight onto the beach.
Want a croc cruise and Cape Trib in one day? Book a tour. It’s a long drive otherwise.

Head south instead (our local secret)
Most visitors go north. We think the south is underrated, and we’re already on the south side of town, so you skip the city traffic.
Babinda Boulders is a crystal-clear swimming hole about an hour away. Only swim in the marked area; the boulders downstream are dangerous. Then drive 15 minutes on to Josephine Falls, at the foot of Bartle Frere, Queensland’s highest mountain. In the dry season there are natural rock slides. Grab a pie in Babinda on the way home.
Where to base yourself
Cairns Southgate Hotel is about 10 minutes from the Reef Fleet Terminal and Cairns station, and right on the road south. Lots of tours pick up from the hotel. Ask us when you book.

Quick answers
How long does it take to get to the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns?
About 90 minutes to the outer reef by fast catamaran, or 45 to 60 minutes to Green Island. All the big tours leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal on Spence Street.
Is the outer reef worth it?
For most people, yes. The water’s clearer and the coral and fish are better. Just take a seasickness tablet if you need one.
Can you do the reef and the Daintree in one day?
Not really from Cairns. Most people do one day on the reef and another in the Daintree.
Do reef tours pick up from hotels?
Many do, sometimes for a small fee. Check when you book, or ask us at reception.
When is stinger season in Cairns?
Usually November to May. Reef boats provide stinger suits, and on land you can swim in netted areas or the Esplanade Lagoon.
